| hero Jun 28, 2010 | don't understand why this problem is so starless... probably one of the best warm ups at tram... it is easy and makes you pull but its not chossy and 30ft tall so i suppose it sucks |
| fraction Jun 28, 2010 | Two stars is pretty decent for a 8-ft tall, semi-chossy climb. It's a fun little problem, but I strongly disagree that it deserves more stars. |
| rtm Jun 29, 2010 | Two stars is a good rating! |
| hero Jun 30, 2010 | what about it is chossy? i don't seem to remember scratching off any pebbles, or breaking any holds... and your spatial awareness is terrible; 8 ft tall? you're about 66% right which (at most schools) is failing... swing dance gets more stars and it's shorter and is a traverse! and 2 stars is not that good on a five star scale; 4 out of ten sounds bad to me! |
| aClimber Jun 30, 2010 | Why such insulting comments? Star ratings just like difficulty ratings are subjective. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We are still a climbing community lets have a little respect please. I agree though, 2 stars is a decent rating. |
| hero Jun 30, 2010 | who insulted anyone? if you thought that benign comment was insulting, i'm glad i held back my typical candid diatribe on socal climbers... I said fraction's spatial awareness was terrible (and the difference between 8 and 12 is significant) but i didn't say he was an idiot b/c his spatial awareness is terrible. He decided to defend his opinion and I pointed out the flaws in both of his arguements. Rating and stars are subjective and that's whats great about them, they lead to discussion! besides, if i agree with his opinion, then we'd both be wrong! |
| fraction Jul 1, 2010 | 2 stars is a good rating. Look around the rest of the site/guidebook and you'll see that. 4-5 star ratings are VERY hard to come by (as they should be), leaving 2 and 3 star ratings for relatively decent climbs. There's no way this climb is better than something like Da Way or Methane (both 3 stars). Heck, Crack O Pop is far superior and it only gets 2.5 stars. But like you said, subjective. If you want to be the lone wolf, you're more than welcome. I truly hope that one day, though, you'll climb something REALLY good -- and you'll realize this climb is, well, 2-stars. **EDIT** You gave this thing 5 stars? Are you freaking kidding me? You think this climb is as good as Change of Heart, Thriller, Midnight Lightning, and Planet X? Man, you need to get out more. |
| rtm Jul 1, 2010 | heheee, reminds me of the good ole days of socalbouldering.com. Where's Satyagraha, he absolutely hates star ratings!!1 |
| Heretic Jul 1, 2010 | Two Cents: Good holds, somewhat big moves (if you're short), tall enough that you'll think about it, slightly overhung. For V1, it's pretty good. |
| aClimber Jul 1, 2010 | I quote, "you're about 66% right which (at most schools) is failing", is not discussion its an unnecessary rude comment. Personal attacks should stay in high school; if you want to prove a point bring some evidence. Hueco shuffle is nothing special. Its a jug haul gym climb. 2 stars is more than enough for a warm up of that calibur. Go climb shades of old school or emerald city if you want to see what a 4+ star low difficulty tramway problem is like. |
| hero Jul 5, 2010 | had a really nice comment but it exceeded 1000 char. length and disappeared when i hit submit... basic idea: stop getting so butthurt esp when its not directed at you... don't know if you got the memo, but this is THE INTERWEBS. Have and will climb many stars and no this is not a 5 star prob... just thought i would cheat to offset the one stars (hey if others can embellish so can I...). You're right that I do need to get out and climb more but i don't need to stroke my ego on a 25' tall slab to prove i am socal worthy; i'd rather do 3 good moves in 10' than 3 good moves in 30' with a bunch of fluff between, just so everyone can know how brave I am... movement trumps altitude everyday of the week... and if being a lone wolf means i get to disassociate myself from the socal scene, then it looks like i finally got what I wanted! w00t, hurray internet! |
| fraction Jul 6, 2010 | "and if being a lone wolf means i get to disassociate myself from the socal scene, then it looks like i finally got what I wanted! w00t, hurray internet!" You're gonna let a thread on the interwebs make you disassociate yourself from the socal climbing scene? Remind me again who's the one getting "butthurt"? Sheesh man. Look, if you can't stand a little heat, don't post such an inflammatory comment in the first place. ps Your argument that we all just give massive star ratings to tall climbs is a little ridiculous. Look at that list of 5-star problems again. Movement, history, setting -- they all have them. Not just height. |
| hero Jul 6, 2010 | no you're list of 5 star problems is legit (although i would argue midnight lightning is more about history than the climbing, truly not that inspiring, crowded, polished; probably better 15 years ago). I was talking more about the stars in the guide and the general attitude of socal regarding tall problems. I know plenty of climbers who can't push the numbers in difficulty so they get their "awesomeness" by pushing the numbers of verticality. I get that some people really get a very special sense from being up there and "unprotected" (that said, i'm not seeing a lot of bold ascents from these folks, just tall stuff that is completely safe with a cool head) but it seems a lot of folks here just use it as a billboard for how badass they are... and I have been butthurt about being part of the socal climbing scene for waaaaay longer than this forum... |
| rtm Jul 8, 2010 | I don't even know what you guys are arguing about anymore, but as per the original comment, I think Hueco Shuffle is a fine boulder problem, and I think 2 stars is a fine rating for such a problem! |
